IRORI provides an unreleased book of natural materials by starting from the Black Irori Stone up to the woods, which are suggested apart from the Smoked elm also in the Shou Sugi Ban processing technique, the centuries-old Japanese method of wood treatment obtained by superficial carbonization. The result is given by an elegant blackbrown colored wood, of which the intensity depends on the type of wood and on how long and deep the combustion process has lasted.

If you were to head up to the town of Heinola, in Central Finland, you’d discover that the answer is fewer than you think. You see, in spite of its position as a global lighting brand for discerning architects, Secto Design certainly keeps it real. Its busy factory employs just a couple of dozen craftspeople – home-grown, Finnish cabinet-makers every one of them.

Secto Design products never forget where they’re from.

Each and every piece that’s produced is authored, as it were. Initialled by the artisan who constructed it. Know this: it’s no easy task making a Secto lamp. Its formal reduction and simplicity belies its innovation, the latter requiring a great deal of know-how, patience and perfectionism. The diligence and passion of the team, however, means that they can nonetheless respond to even the largest of orders.

High-quality, PEFC-certified Finnish birch veneer is form-pressed into blanks, which are then cut into slats. These are sanded and finally connected using rings of aircraft plywood. The slats are then glued and nailed to the rings. A proud craftsperson’s signature may be one thing, but that doesn’t mean the lamps avoid a rigorous quality inspection before leaving the factory.

El nuevo SUV de lujo de 4,8 metros se ha diseñado pensando en la elegancia. Massimo Frascella, el diseñador del Range Rover Velar, nos explicaba en Gaydon (Inglaterra) cómo presenta mucha distancia desde la rueda delantera a la puerta y cómo el voladizo posterior se ha alargado para potenciar esta sensación de estar ante un producto exquisito.

No vienen solos estos detalles: los tiradores de las puertas del Velar emergen al acercar la mano, de forma que cuando están cerrados hacen que el aspecto de la carrocería sea más limpio; los rasgadísimos faros Matrix-láser LED (tienen un alcance de 550 metros y no deslumbran a los conductores que vienen de frente) resultan muy llamativos y las llantas de hasta 22 pulgadas le dan un toque de lo más elitista.

Siendo muy amplio por dentro gracias a su distancia entre ejes de 2.874 mm, los privilegiados periodistas que pudimos ver en vivo el coche (en parado, eso sí) no podíamos dejar de contemplar las dos pantallas táctiles de 10 pulgadas y alta definición del nuevo sistema de infoentretenimiento Touch Pro Duo con conectividad 4G y Wi-Fi para ocho dispositivos, la de arriba basculante para que mejore el ángulo de visión respecto a conductor y acompañante.

Es a través de ella (y desde los mandos táctiles del volante) como controlamos todo lo relativo a multimedia, navegación con información sobre tráfico real, teléfono, Terrain Response... Pero también sorprende la desaparición de casi todos los botones o mandos (más allá de las ruedas del cambio y el Terrain Response), de forma que solo encontramos el de puesta en marcha del vehículo, el de encendido y apagado del equipo de audio y las dos ruedas para seleccionar la temperatura del climatizador.

Los asientos pueden llevar la tradicional tapicería de piel, pero es primicia una tapicería textil con materiales de alta calidad como alternativa sostenible al cuero. Un comodísimo diseño de los asientos redondean la altísima sensación de confort a bordo, con la ventaja adicional de saber que, gracias a los 673 litros del maletero, pocas cosas serán las que dejemos en nuestros viajes.

Los motores básicos que ofrecerá el Range Rover Velar son dos diésel Ingenium 2.0, el primero con 180 CV y 430 Nm de par (pasa de 0 a 100 en 8,9 segundos y gasta de media 5,4 l/100 km) y el segundo con 240 CV y 500 Nm (consume 5,8 l de media y hace el 0 a 100 en 7,3 s). Por encima, el V6 3.0 entrega 300 CV y 700 Nm (241 km/h y 6,4 l/100 km).

En cuanto a los de gasolina, parten de los 250 CV y 365 Nm del 2.0 básico, por encima se podrá escoger una mecánica con 300 CV y 400 Nm de par, y como tope de gama aparece un V6 sobrealimentado con 380 CV y 450 Nm de par que impulsará al Velar de 0 a 100 en solo 5,7 segundos. Tanto esta como el resto de mecánicas cuentan con una transmisión automática ZF de ocho velocidades.

En Land Rover no han pasado por alto el hecho de que el Velar vaya a ser destinado sobre todo para circular sobre asfalto. Por ello, se ha afinado el chasis con una suspensión neumática (de serie con los motores seis cilindros y opcional con los cuatro cilindros de 240 y 300 CV) que reduce la altura de la carrocería al circular a 105 km/h o más y agacha la carrocería 40 mm cuando el coche está apagado para facilitar la entrada y salida del vehículo.

En la firma británica aseguran que todo ello, junto con la suspensión delantera independiente y el eje trasero Integral Link (ambos con muchos componentes de aluminio) asegurará un confort muy elevado.

Pero no por ello podían dejar de atender a las cualidades todo terreno de su nuevo modelo, que en este caso vienen garantizadas por la tracción total, la rapidísima actuación de su caja transfer, el sistema Terrain Response (con modos Eco, Confort, Hierba/Gravilla/nieve, Barro/Surcos y Arena), el control de crucero a velocidades de entre 1,8 y 30 km/h (ATPC), el Low Traction Launch, el Hill Descent Control y una profundidad de vadeo de hasta 650 mm.

Por supuesto, sus dueños se favorecerán de unas soluciones de asistencia al conductor de primer nivel que incluyen el frenado de emergencia autónomo (AEB), la cámara estereoscópica que nos avisa si nos salimos del carril, el reconocimiento de señales de tráfico, el detector de tráfico de marcha atrás (nos avisa mediante una advertencia en los retrovisores de cualquier peligro) y el control de crucero adaptativo (ACC). Pero quizá el más sorprendente de ellos sea el nuevo sistema semiautónomo 'advanced tow assist', que mueve el volante por sí solo a la hora de circular marcha atrás con remolque.

Pese a que no llega hasta julio, el Range Rover Velar ya se puede encargar en los concesionarios y precio el precio de la versión básica es de 60.250 euros.

Suena a ciencia ficción pero no lo es. Daniel Simon, jefe de diseño de Roborace, lleva años trabajando en un coche que finalmente ve la luz. Un automóvil que puede alcanzar velocidades cercanas a los 320 kilómetros por hora.

En todo esto entra en juego un término muy recurrente en los últimos años, "Inteligencia Artificial". El coche será conducido por sí mismo gracias a multitud de sensores, cámaras y radares de posicionamiento coordinados por un software, el Nvidia Drive PX2.

Simon puso en valor en la presentación, la evolución de la Inteligencia Artificial. "Roborace abre una nueva dimensión. El automovilismo como lo conocemos se encuentra con el imparable ascenso de la IA (Inteligencia Artificial)", declaraba.

No están solos en esta apuesta. Una marca histórica de neumáticos, Michelín, ha decidido embarcarse con ellos en este proyecto, convirtiéndose en el socio oficial de la Roborace.

De la mano de la Fórmula E, la otra gran apuesta eléctrica en el mundo del automovilismo, Roborace quiere romper con lo establecido en el mundo del motor y cambiar las carreras, tal y como las conocíamos.
